Laura Fitzgerald
McFerran Prepatory Academy
Louisville, Kentucky

Laura Fitzgerald brings a hands-on approach to her teaching. An instructor at McFerran Prepatory Academy in Louisville, Ky., Ms. Fitzgerald runs a science lab providing real-world experience to enhance her students' classroom learning. She has built a wetlands area within a city setting, establishing walking trails and a school garden. "Science is observing life, and my lab is a great venue for that," she said. Her unique approach yields results beyond mere learning. "The enthusiasm of my students is a reward in and of itself."

Darleen Horton
Chenoweth Elementary School
Louisville, Kentucky

A science lab teacher at Chenoweth Elementary School in Louisville, Ky., Darleen Horton sees her role as part of an ongoing learning experience that extends beyond teacher and student. Her initial inspiration to educate came from a highly motivating teacher in her own youth, whose concern for the academic and personal success of her students has become Ms. Horton's model. "To know I could help children believe in themselves gave me a sense of fulfillment even then," she said. Today, she combines her dedication to students with her own ongoing learning and development. "If I want my students to become lifelong learners," she said, "then I must be one."
