From September 7-8, Amgen Scholars across Europe met at Cambridge for the third annual Amgen Scholars Symposium, hosted by Amgen Foundation in collaboration with the University of Cambridge. Established in 2006 in the U.S. and 2008 in Europe as a result of Amgen’s commitment to inspire the next generation of scientists, Amgen Scholars provides undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in hands-on research experience at 13 of the world’s leading universities. The participating universities seek to match students with faculty members who will both inspire and challenge them.
During the symposium, 74 Amgen Scholars from across Europe had the opportunity to discuss their summer research projects, learn more about biotechnology and scientific careers, and hear firsthand from industry and academic scientists. A similar symposium took place earlier this year at UCLA for the U.S. Amgen Scholars.
The European Amgen Scholars were selected from nearly 450 applicants to participate in the summer research experience and attend the autumn symposium. Under the mentorship of faculty members, the participating students – representing 39 colleges and universities across 16 European countries – explored areas of research beyond the typical scope of their regular undergraduate course.
There are nearly 1,200 Amgen Scholar alumni across the U.S. and Europe. More than 80 percent of program alumni who have graduated from college are now pursuing an advanced degree or a career in science or engineering, with many in scientific PhD programs at top universities across the world.
