Amgen’s Operations Team Honored with Environmental Sustainability Achievement

A team of Amgen engineers has been awarded the 2017 Energy Project of the Year: International award from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). The award recognizes a project that has achieved prominence in promoting energy engineering and management. Amgen was presented with the award for our “first-of-a-kind approach” on an advanced data analysis initiative, the Smart and Integrated Facility (SaIF) program. The team responsible for the project accepted the honor at the AEE Awards Banquet at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA in conjunction with the World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC) on September 27, 2017.

“At Amgen, we continuously seek science-based and data-driven ways to optimize our energy management and create new opportunities for efficient operations,” said Tom Spooner, director of Engineering. “We are proud to have been recognized by AEE for SaIF, which is providing benefits we are realizing now and that we only expect to grow in the future.”

SaIF collects, interprets, and analyzes hundreds of thousands of data points from automation and control systems to uncover cost savings and conservation opportunities across our complex network of facilities. Amgen implemented phase one of the initiative in 2016, and to date, SaIF has resulted in annual savings of over $1.2 million and prevention of more than 5,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. SaIF is planned to be implemented at additional sites in the coming years.

The Association of Energy Engineers, founded in 1977, is a nonprofit professional society of over 18,000 members in more than 100 countries. Their mission is “to promote the scientific and educational interests of those engaged in the energy industry and to foster action for Sustainable Development.”
