Leptin
Recombinant leptin (r-metHuLeptin) is a genetically engineered form of a naturally occurring cytokine hormone secreted by fat cells. Leptin appears to act primarily at the hypothalamus to regulate food intake and energy expenditure. Humans suffering from lipodystrophy, a disease characterized by loss of body fat and consequent metabolic disorders (insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia) are rendered incapable of secreting sufficient amounts of leptin due to the loss of fat. Early clinical studies have been conducted investigating leptin in the treatment of lipodystrophy.
