When Buildings Talk: Saving Natural and Financial Resources through Data

Amgen is a science-based, data-driven company, right down to the way that we manage our facilities. Amgen is a pioneer in our industry in the use of a sophisticated data collection and monitoring system to assess performance of the utilities that consume the most power in our buildings.

Through this big data process, we collect hundreds of thousands of data points from utilities such as Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning at some of our biggest sites and send that data through a software system that looks for inconsistencies. Energy managers then interpret the data, helping our buildings to tell us when they aren’t performing well.

In the past, without this level of sophistication to monitor and interpret data, performance problems may have been hidden to us, wasting energy and dollars. Now we are equipped to diagnose and fix issues quickly, which saves energy and money in the short term and expands the life of buildings in the long run. In 2016 this data system helped Amgen track down and resolve $750,000 worth of building issues, conserving enough energy to prevent 1.1 metric tons of carbon emissions.
