Amgen is committed to environmentally sustainable construction practices. We are proud to have three buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council in our portfolio, one at LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum, one at LEED Gold, and another at LEED Certified.
Green Offices and Labs
We are transforming selected offices and labs to fit an activity-based work model allowing staff to work within and across functions in a more collaborative way. These labs and offices are designed to make efficient use of space in a smaller environmental footprint while maximizing wellness benefits for staff. The new labs and offices are designed to incorporate abundant natural light and encourage movement throughout the day with a variety of fit-for-purpose workspaces that contain adjustable workstations to fit ergonomic needs of staff. We are remodeling these spaces to meet or exceed LEED Silver status. Using LEED guidelines, the new spaces include environmentally friendly features such as recycled materials, LED lighting, power monitoring, and water efficient fixtures. In the remodeling process, we send as much material for recycling as possible.
Green Manufacturing Design
In 2016, we continued to prepare our new facility in Singapore for regulatory review and approval. At this facility, innovations in drug-substance manufacturing will allow us to produce the same annual output as a conventional facility in a significantly smaller footprint. The modular, compact design will also lower the plant's environmental impact. With a footprint that is less than one-sixth the size of a conventional biomanufacturing facility, this facility is expected to provide decreases in energy expenses as well as reduced carbon emissions. Single-use bioreactors will also reduce the amount of water needed to clean and sterilize equipment. We have designed our two manufacturing buildings at this location to meet Green Mark requirements. We are aiming for an even higher level of Green Mark for the Manufacturing support building at this site.
Our LEED-certified drug product manufacturing facility in
Puerto Rico uses isolator technology, which creates an airtight barrier
around a process eliminating the need for large conventional clean rooms. This
technology provides substantial energy savings, as much as 60 percent over a
conventional clean room.
