Wellness at Amgen
As a company that creates innovative human therapeutics, we are committed to providing resources and facilities for staff to pursue healthy lifestyles. Peer reinforcement is also integral to wellness at Amgen—staff love to cheer each other on in their journeys toward better health. We field a team of more than 100 wellness champion advocates at our sites worldwide.
Staff are rewarded for their participation in wellness programs with health plan discounts and other incentives. We provide access to fitness facilities or memberships, offer healthy eating options, and hold many fitness-oriented events throughout the year.
We know that the working environment is important to good health. We are creating work environments that support active working and staff well-being. These buildings and work spaces provide access to abundant natural light and a choice of flexible work areas that fit the multiple kinds of work staff perform whether they are in an office or a lab. The variety of spaces inspires staff to get up and move throughout the day, and ergonomic equipment is intended to support a safe and comfortable work environment for staff.
Highlights of 2016 Wellness at Amgen Programs:
- Walking is great exercise and is encouraged and rewarded at Amgen. Walks are informal strolls by staff members, walking meetings, or official events with hundreds of staff participating. In 2016, nearly 4,500 staff and their spouses/partners took our Walk to Wellness program challenge, logging more than 1.2 billion steps.
- Amgen staff "compete intensely and win" as a core value, but they also make room for mindfulness. Close to 1,700 staff opted to relax and recharge with our Mindfulness Challenge program that includes guided audio meditations and a meditation tracker.
- Involvement in the Wellness Moment program more than doubled in 2016. Qualified professionals integrate health information and coaching into meetings, including information about fitness, health, nutrition, resiliency, and team building. Amgen also provides healthy menus for catered meetings.
Occupational health programs support staff members on the job wherever their work takes them. In addition to managing work-related conditions, travel consultations are provided to prepare staff for health and safety risks while traveling. Flu shots and other vaccination services, on-site health screenings, and ergonomic assessments are all part of Amgen's occupational health offerings.
To help Amgen staff achieve work-life balance, Amgen offers flexible work schedules, telecommuting, remote work, part-time work, and job-sharing options, as appropriate.
