Should I Wear a Face Mask When Out in Public?

Clarification: As of April 3, 2020, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has offered new guidance with regard to the use of non-medical masks. For more information, visit their website.

It’s the question on everybody’s mind right now. With millions of people around the world sheltering at home in response to COVID-19, there’s a lot of confusion about the best ways to protect oneself if you need to leave home for essentials like food or medication. Do you need a face mask if you are healthy? Or, should you wear one no matter what.

Dr. Steven Galson, SVP, Global Regulatory and Safety for Amgen, has been helping us provide information to patients, staff and the public during these challenging times. We asked him for guidance around face mask use. Watch his interview in the video above. Dr. Galson previously served as Acting Surgeon General of the United States and managed the government response to the H1N1 flu. He also videotaped this from his home office, complying with physical distancing guidelines. You can also watch his tutorial on hand washing here.

As Dr. Galson said, let’s use science not fear to get through this challenging time.
