Data Driven to Conserve Energy

Amgen is a science-focused, data-driven company, right down to the way that we manage our facilities. Amgen is a pioneer in our industry in the use of a sophisticated data collection and monitoring system to assess performance of the utilities that consume the most power in our buildings. This system was the winner of the 2017 Energy Project of the Year: International from the Association of Energy Engineers.

Through this system, we collect hundreds of thousands of data points from utilities such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning at some of our biggest sites and send that data through a software system that looks for inconsistencies. This increased level of detail gives energy managers the insight to identify opportunities to fix or improve systems and realize energy and financial savings. The opportunities we identified in 2017 resulted in savings of 67,800 gigajoules of energy.

“The cheapest, cleanest unit of energy is the one you don’t use,” said Derek Mullins, energy manager. “A major contributor to our energy and carbon reduction achievements at Amgen has been strategic energy-saving projects, which follow this basic idea that it’s better to conserve energy in the first place.”
